Day 72 of 100 - So nervous I almost threw up
March 13th.
First things first. I freakin fell asleep with 30 push ups left of my 100 last night. But I didn't have time to mull over it too much because I was about to have to row 2000m (or about 7 minutes of pulling like a maniac) and then have 10 seconds to walk over to a bar with 275lbs and deadlift it as many times as I could without dropping the bar or stopping at the bottom...Here is what I did...
I decided that to get back into integrity with my 100 push ups I would do my remaining 30 before my Crossfit workout and do another 100 that afternoon.
Now the 1st workout...
I had only rowed 1000 meters twice before in my life, and had never rowed 2000 meters before. I didn't know what kind of mental gymnastics where waiting for me at 1500 meters or how heavy 275lbs would be after the row. My MAX deadlift is only 350 lbs so I thought maybe I could do it 3 times depending on how jello my legs were from the row.
As I told a friend, this workout was like breaking your leg. It does no good to worry about it beforehand, but once it happens you just deal with it.
We were led into the competition area, met the judges, got some instruction, and then strapped into the rower and waited for the GO signal......3....2....1....and we were off!!
I was surprised at the adrenaline rush and made sure to back off a bit so I did not blow out. If you are familiar with row machines the timer shows your 500 meter pace. I noticed in the earlier waves that guys were averaging about 1:53 so I kept my pace at about 1:48, but again I have no idea what I am doing and did not know if I could hold that pace.
As I get to the last 500 meters and realize that I am going to live I picked it up a bit. Turns out that I am much better rower than I thought and got up off the rower about 5th in my heat of 25, but now I have ten seconds to get to the deadlift.
I approached the bar, grabbed it and lifted. Got it, but it was indeed heavy. My legs were a bit wobbly. After the 2nd lift they seemed to get easier. I could hear my friend Blake screaming at me not to drop it.
Now, the reason for the deadlifts is that for every one you do, it subtracts 5 seconds off of your row time to compute your workout rankings. So if I rowed 2000 meters in 7:13 and did one deadlift my final score would be 7:08. Get it?
So as I am deadlifting the bar that is all I am thinking. 5 more seconds man, 5 more seconds off the row if you can do one more. I lifted the bar for a 6th time. On the seventh try I finally dropped it. I was very happy.
Only problem was....remember all those guys I beat out of the row? Well those maniacs were deadlifting the bar 12 to 15 times cutting more than a minute off their row times. One dude deadlifted 275lbs 36 times. Yes you heard me right. 36.
So... I came in 67th place out of 120 guys.
BUT there is a second workout in the afternoon!!!
I will make this short but sweet.
The 2nd workout was much more suited to my strengths.
3 rounds of 4 Handstand Push ups, 8 Clean and Jerks with 135lbs, and 12 Chest Burpees
Here is a link that shows me doing the workout next to my buddy Jevon. He beat me by 2 seconds but I did so well that it jumped me from 67th to 48th place heading into Sunday.
