David was born on February 6, 1974 in San Diego, California. He grew up in rural Texas, graduated from Flatonia High School in 1992, and earned an Associates Degree in History from Blinn College 1995. Over the years he became heavily involved in strength and conditioning programs, and in 1998, after reading the results of the Texas Relays in the Austin American Statesman, he decided to take on the Decathlon (ten events: the 100M, Long Jump, Shot Put, High Jump, 400M, 110M Hurdles, Discus, Pole Vault, Javelin, and 1500M).
He had never competed in many of the events, but felt that if he stayed committed he would be able learn. David ordered video tapes, track magazines, a shot-put, a javelin, a discus, and a ridiculous array of track shoes. He joined a Track Club, the Austin Striders, and began to work towards a goal to compete in a Decathlon by May of 2000. It was a slow, humbling process in which he suffered many setbacks, including chronic shin splint pain, stress fractures, and tendonitis in his right elbow. Then in March of 2000, despite never previously competing in 6 of the 10 events, he placed 11th out of 22 college scholarship athletes. At the age of 27 he scored well enough to be offered a track scholarship to Huston-Tillotson College. He went on to qualify and compete in the NAIA National Championships for 2001, finishing (10th), and 2002, finishing (8th).
After graduating from Huston-Tillotson, David took a job with a Management Consulting firm, but continued to train clients part time. During the next couple of years he never lost sight of his dream to create a fitness program that would differ from the day to day gym routine, but would still produce significant results. He engaged in continuous research and study and was always involving his clients in different work out and diet programs with moderate, but not earth shattering results. He tried the Atkins and the Body for Life diets, as well as testing innumerable supplements. All produced results, but were too difficult to work for a client long term. He felt something was still missing.
A personal trainer in Virginia recommended tracking calories. Though it seemed simple David reluctantly gave it a try. First it was tracking daily calories, then protein, carbs, and fat found there way into the mix. Sure enough, calorie restriction, with a healthy supply of protein began taking off pounds of fat. Then he added a heart rate monitor to track how many calories were being burned during the workouts.
After using the above items for 12 weeks, in combination with a moderate training program (1 hour, 4 times a week), David was able to lose 18 pounds (196 to 178) and drop his body fat percentage from 12% to 3.5%. (He has been able to maintain 6%)
He again turned his sights on clients to be sure it was not a genetic fluke. Sure enough, there was a 100% success rate for all body types both sexes (15 clients). Whatever the clients were willing to do within healthy lines provided very predictable body fat loss.
David realized very quickly that writing down calories every day would not appeal to the general public. So after much research, Calorie King, was found to provide a platform for easy entry and valuable reports. It is web based and allows for daily feedback from the coach!
Over and over David would hear that no one had ever heard of putting all these elements together in a fitness program that didn't require a trip to California. So he quit his Consultant job and David King Fitness was born.
He started out working with friends, coworkers and his parents. Now, just 3 short years later DKF is widely recognized as the premiere one-on-one fitness program in Austin, with a regular roster of 30 to 50 clients, 90% of whom achieve dramatic physical and mental results.
